Mrs. Syeda Rezia Ali (1923-1997): Our Inspiration

Syeda Razia
Mrs. Syeda Rezia Ali was the late mother of Dr. M.A. Mannan and a key inspiration behind all of the charitable works for HMCT. She was known for her progressiveness and great generosity of heart and spirit among family, friends, and the greater community. She had especial concern for the poor. During her most vibrant years, she gave away her gold jewelry to help the needy- indeed, by the time of her death none of her valuables were left behind.  The significance of this cannot be stressed enough. During a time when women were primarily housewives and dependent on their husbands for financial security, gold jewelry was considered insurance, economic security, and sole personal property of women.
Dr. Mannan’s father, Dr. Khadem Ali, was very supportive of his wife’s charitable activities. As a physician himself, he routinely gave free care, including financial support for food to poor patients and was very loved in the community. It was in this household of very loving and generous parents that Dr. Mannan was raised and formed his core values. Dr. Mannan, with his equally generous and highly supportive wife, Mrs. Nargis Mannan, have in turn instilled these values of compassion in their own children through their exemplary conduct. It is within this historical and familial context that Dr. Mannan donated almost all of his wealth to HMCT with the consent of his wife and children to serve the most vulnerable populations in Bangladesh. Charity indeed, begins at home.
